Private Planting Programme |
|
Although the Private Planting Programme is active all year, October is a particularly busy time for seedling distribution as farmers and landowners take advantage of the "big" rainy season to get their timber tree seedlings planted and established before the onset of the dry season in December/January. For more
information: The Private Planting Programme continues to be very active assisting owners of small and large holdings with tree planting. For the period 2008 - 2009, more than 900,000 seedlings were distributed to over 1500 landowners, for the planting of approximately 1500 hectares of lands. Approximately 5,000 tree seedlings are being kept on hand at the various Department nurseries for distribution to schools, civic groups, individuals, and organisations planning tree planting projects. The timbers tree species available are Honduras mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), blue mahoe (Hibiscus elatus), Spanish elm (Cordia gerascanthus), bitter damsel (Simarouba glauca), West Indian cedar (Cedrela odorata) and teak (Tectona grandis).
