Forest Watch
 

The first of the "Forest Watch" video series has been completed. "Hillside Farmer" follows on the success and popularity of the children's video "You are Tree", launched in September 2001, and is aimed at a more general audience. Each of the 3 planned videos focus on a "forest hero" - a person who is making a contribution to forest conservation, watershed protection, and any number of other activities which will enhance our forest environment. Roundtable of Partners in Development
  The Government of Jamaica held an International Roundtable of Partners in Development from the 26th to 28th of February 2002, at which our 5-year National Forest Management and Conservation Plan (NFMCP) was formally presented to international development organizations, international non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. The aim of the meeting was to seek broad-based endorsement of and financial and technical support for the implementation of the Forest Plan. Local Forest Management Committees on the Move
  The Local Forest Management Committees (LFMCs) in the Buff Bay/Pencar watershed, with the assistance of FD staff, have been successful in securing funding to start up a community nursery. Construction of the nursery is sponsored by the "Enhancing Civil Society Project" funded by the Canadian International Development Agency. For more information, please click here. Winners of the Science Research Council Essay and Poster Competition
  The Trees For Tomorrow Project, funded by the Canadian International Development Agency, sponsored prizes on behalf of the Forestry Department in the recently concluded SRC Essay and Poster Competition. Prizes total twenty thousand dollars ($20,000.00) were provided in the "Saving our Trees" category for primary school students ages 9-12. Establishment of Special Funds for Forest Conservation
  Cabinet has approved the establishment of two funds dedicated to the sustainable development of the country's forest lands. The two funds are the Jamaica Forest Management and Conservation Fund, as proposed in the National Forest Management Plan and the Tropical Forest Fund, a special purpose fund which must be established to receive payments negotiated from debt reduction permitted under the United States' Tropical Forest Conservation Act (TFCA). Forestry Department, A Partner in Lift Up Jamaica
 

On June 1st, 1999, an island-wide public work programme, Lift up Jamaica, was launched by Prime Minister P.J. Patterson. The Lift Up Jamaica (LUJ) Programme targets both the reforestation of 2,500 hectares of crown lands and the rehabilitation, repair, and upgrading of physical assets within communities such as drainage, basic schools, parks, and sanitary conveniences. The Forestry Department is the implementing agency for the forestry component of the programme. The Lift Up Jamaica Programme has contributed significantly to the Forestry Department's reforestation programme. The LUJ has been granted several 6-month extensions, the latest being in April 2002. Spinal Forest Project

  The Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ) has developed the Spinal Forest Project which proposes to re-establish a forest along the central mountain spine of Jamaica. The Forestry Department will have the key role as the areas encompassed by this central mountain spine includes the majority of Jamaica's forest reserves - Blue Mountain, Dry Harbour, Cockpit Country, and Dolphin Head. Maps & GIS Data Service Launched

  Data on Jamaica's forest cover, landuse and geography are available on maps published using the ArcXML protocol employed by ESRI's ArcIMS software
