Forestry Department collaborates with Corporate Jamaica |
The partnership was formalised on June 4, 2010 to coincide with World Environment Day with tree planting exercises islandwide. NCB employees from branches across the island planted trees at primary schools symbolising peace, prosperity, and hope. It was also an opportunity for schools to beautify the grounds at the various institutions and promote environmental awareness among students. The Forestry Department provided the over 120 seedlings that were given to more than 20 schools that were selected. The species of plants given to the schools were Blue Mahoe, Lignum Vitae, Poinciana and Pride of Barbados. On Tuesday, June 1, Marilyn Headley, CEO and Conservator of Forests symbolically handed over plants to the head boy and head girl of Half Way Tree Primary, who also planted trees at their school. Lois Morgan, Nursery Coordinator at Forestry Department, Belinda Williams, Manager of Corporate Communications and Sharon Williams, Manager of Private Banking at NCB were also in attendance to assist in the handover. In May, the Bank of Nova Scotia started a partnership with the Forestry Department as a component of its recently launched “Go Green” project. The initiative, which involves several projects, is aimed at promoting awareness and environmental practices. The aspect of the programme involving forestry will see the Agency providing plants to environmental clubs at primary schools. Several schools were presented with seedlings at the launch of the project and those were planted on Labour Day, May 23, 2010.
